On our way to Darwin via Bangkok!

UNDERCURRENT has it's first public showing

On 19 and 20 October we performed UNDERCURRENT for Chiang Mai University theatre students and member os the local theatre community and friends. These were the first public showings and a chance for us to get some feedback. THANK YOU to all who attended for your warm response and insightful feedback.

Chiang Mai composer Patiparn Jaikampan (Kim) joins the team

Kim's been recommended to us by our good friend Chaipruk Mekara (Jiew) and is composing original music for the show. Kim studied composition at Payap University. He received the "Young Thai Artist Award" (2012 - 2015). His music has been performed at festivals including Beijing Modern Music Festival, Asia-Europe New Music Festival, and Yogyakarta Contemporary Music Festival. Recently he was selected to participate in the International Einojuhani Rautavaara Chamber Choir Composition Workshop and Competition 2016, Finland.

Ok so it's not all hard work. Today we had an outing to MeGnut Dam.

Final Stage of Development

We've come together for the final stage in Chiang Mai. After 3 weeks of making props, masks and shadow puppets Todd Williams and Sarah Cathcart have joined us to being piecing the final work together. Todd's creating some beautiful video and animation. Sarah's getting to know us all and has begun crafting the story for the stage. It's all go now as we head to the finish line!

Preparations have begun for the final stage of Read My Lips!

With funding confirmed from the Australia Council, and the Northern Territory Government's Department of the Chief Minister Multicultural Grants Program, we are busy getting started on preparations for the final stage of Read My Lips.

A BIG WELCOME to Sarah Cathcart who joins the team as Director. We also welcome back Todd Williams as designer of video and animation.

The final stage will include development and rehearsal in Chiang Mai, performances at the Chiang Mai Arts & Culture Center on 17/18 October, and a two week season of performances from 3-15 November at Brown's Mart Theatre in Darwin.

We'll also be celebrating all things Thai at the Thai Cultural Night on Thursday 5 November with delicious Thai cuisine and performances before the show. Families are welcome to join us on Saturday 7 November for a free shadow puppet workshop.

We're all looking forward to completing the work and bringing you the final production of Read My Lips!

Brown's Mart Theatre launches 2015 SHIMMER Season

On Thursday night Brown's Mart Theatre launched its SHIMMER Season Program for 2015. Read My Lips stands alongside other local performances including The Glass Menagerie, Mary Anne Butler's new work Broken, Australia Day by Jonathan Biggins and the latest absurdities of Creatures of Habit.

Read My Lips will be performed at Brown's Mart from 3-15 November.

Tonight we shared the results of our last 4 weeks' work with the Thai community of Darwin and the local arts community.

A big THANK YOU to Hudson Tippet for the use of his warehouse and home! Thanks too to our wonderful audience for your support and feedback.

The showing drew together several short excerpts of scenes from Read My Lips. Technical support was provided by Brown's Mart through Julie Blythe and Barry Ramage. Brown's Mart also provided equipment and production support.

As audience members entered they were shown to a table and invited to create their own Thai offerings which were placed on a small alter. The audience then gathered on chairs and mats to watch the performance. The set was simple – a sandy floor held screens strung between bamboo poles and decorated with woven palm fronds in the shapes of crocodiles.

A feedback session was held at the end of the performance. Feedback sheets were also provided. Some of the written responses included:

“Great work and wonderful idea and themes. Love to see you again next year.”

“Set and design stood out. Great work guys. Weaving was brilliant. Really enjoyed it!!!”

Of course, no Thai gathering would be complete without food! The audience enjoyed Thai snacks and some delicious home cooking contributed by members of the Thai community.

We're all now looking forward to the 3rd and final instalment of Ready My Lips with performances of the complete work in Chiang Mai and Darwin in 2015.

Beginning of week 4 and the showing is 4 days away. We are finishing off the prop and cut-outs and mask painting. The objects are made of found objects - pandanus leaves etc from our gardens.
This afternoon we move into the showing space - a huge warehouse in the city. It'll be very hot but also exciting to get into the space and experiment with lighting and movement.

End of week two already. We are in a making frenzy, I have glue all over my hands - hours of peeling fun later - Tip and Bow are creating a beautiful shadow background image, Pahn is looking at sound and Gail is lost in the bowels of our potential site - a cavernous warehouse in the city- with Angus checking out the power.
We have a shape for our showing and are continuing exploration into the numerous ways of combining elements. I had a good excuse to buy a poetry collection today as we are keen to include distilled language in some way.

Most importantly, the Thai women have shown me how to make green mango salad from the mango tree in my garden. The fruit bats and possums get them before they ripen so I have beaten them to it this time!

Wandering Moon arrive in Darwin to continue development of Read My Lips

Tip, Bow and Parn have arrived in Darwin to spend 4 weeks working with Gail and Nicky to further develop Read My Lips. Hosted by Brown's Mart Theatre as part of the 2014 Build Up program, the artists will spend this time together to finalise the story and develop the visual imagery. Stage 2 of development is also supported by the Northern Territory Government through FestivalsNT.

There will be a public development showing on the evening of Friday 24 October to share the outcomes of the Build Up development, followed by a Q&A and feedback session. Details of the venue and time are still to come, so stay tuned!

มาละเหวย มาละวา Here we go again!

พอได้ยินว่าเราได้ทุนทำงานนี้ต่อ   เราทุกคนดีใจละตื่นเต้นมาก เพราะคราวที่แล้ว เรารู้สึกสนุกและยังมีความรู้สึกว่าน่าจะมีอะไรที่เอามาใส่ในงานได้อีก  ทั้งเกลและนิ้กกี้ ศิลปินสองคนจากออสเตรเลียก็ดูเข้ากับพวกเราได้ดี มีความอดทนและเปิดกว้าง  

อาทิตย์แรกเมื่อมาถึงที่ดาร์วิน   อากาศไม่มีผลอะไรมากนักเพราะแทบจะอุณหภูมิเดียวกันเลยทีเดียว   วันแรกผ่านไปด้วยการพูดคุยทักทาย เราลงเล่นน้ำในสระที่บ้านของเกล และแน่นอนวามันต้องจบลงที่ อาหารเหมือนที่มันเคยเกิดขึ้นเป็นประจำตอนอยู่บ้านเรา  น่าแปลกที่เราน้ำลายไหล เมื่อเห็นมะม่วงดิบตามต้นมะม่วงที่มีอยู่ทั่วไปในดาร์วิน แต่พวกป้าๆ กลับไม่ใส่ใจใยดี   พอพวกเราบอกว่ามันมีวิธีกินนะ และไม่รอช้าเลยที่จะแสดงให้เห็นว่ายำมะม่วงรสชาติจัดจ้านชวนน้ำลายสอมันเป็นยังไง  หึหึ    ทำไงได้ล่ะเนอะ คนไทยเรากับอาหารไทยน่ะมันอยู่ในสายเลือด  กินไปก็ถามสูตรไปท่าทางติดใจ  ของมันก็ทำได้ง่ายๆ น่ะ  หมุนๆ ดูในครัวก็มีกันทั้งนั้น 

  ได้ข่าวว่าสองวันต่อมาเกลก็ทำยำมะม่วงให้ลูกสาวกินอีก   เอิ่ม  เรียกว่าเป็นการแลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรมกันตั้งแต่มาถึงกันเลยทีเดียว

 ตอนนี้เราเริ่มทำงานไปบ้างแล้ว  สิ่งที่เรากังวลและสงสัยก็ถูกทำให้ กระจ่างขึ้นจากการพูดคุย  เพราะดูแล้วเราก็มีสิ่งใหม่ที่เราสนใจอยากจะบอกเล่า อยากเอามาใส่ในงาน  คราวนี้มันเป็นสิ่งที่เราคุ้นหูแต่ไม่ค่อยได้ใส่ใจอะไรมาก อย่างเช่นจระเข้   ก่อนเราจะมาจากเมืองไทย มีข่าวสองสามข่าวเกี่ยวกับอุบัติเหตุที่เกี่ยวกับจระเข้  แล้วจะว่าไป ครั้งที่แล้วที่เรามาเปิดแสดงหุ่นเงาที่ดาร์วิน เราก็  ฝังใจกับจระเข้ที่นี่ เพราะนอกจากจะมีมากมายแล้ว ยังดุร้ายเอามากๆ อีกด้วย   เมื่อลองกลับมาคิดทบทวนและ หาข้อมูลจากที่ต่างๆ ทำให้เรารู้สึกว่า ความรู้สึกที่มีต่อจระเข้ ที่บ้านกับที่นี่มันต่างกันมาก  เพราะที่บ้าน ถึงเราจะได้ข่าวความดุร้ายของมันยังไง เราก็ยังรู้สึกว่าจระเข้บ้านเรายังมีความเป็นมิตรอยู่บ้าง และจาก นิทานพื้นบ้านหรือ วรรณคดีของเรา จระเข้อยู่ในสถานะต่างๆ ที่หลากหลายและมีมิติที่มากกว่า เครื่องจักรสังหารที่คนดาร์วินรู้สึก มากมายนัก  ดังนั้น ความสนใจที่เกิดขึ้น มันน่าจะมีความแตกต่างหรือความเชื่อมโยงบางอย่างกับคนที่นี่  หรือไม่ก็ เราอาจจะหยิบยื่นมุมมองใหม่ที่คนต่างถิ่นอย่างเรามองสัตว์ชนิดนี้ในบ้านเราให้คนที่นี่ได้รับรู้ งานนี้ชาละวัน ไกรทอง  ได้คิวออกอาละวาดเสียก็ไม่รู้
